SELSports were awarded the contract for the BHS rooftop project. The contract was split into two phases, Phase 1 was to install a robust rubber tiled area to one side of the rooftop and phase 2 was to install an all-weather synthetic turf rooftop MUGA and remaining rubber tiled areas.
A regulating gravel layer was installed to minimise undulations in the roof. A single layer raft of modular, interlocking SELSports lightweight drainage units was installed across the entire roof area. The SELSports units were inverted in the tiled areas such that red anti-shear connectors could be inserted to secure the heavy duty rubber tiles. A prefabricated shockpad was installed directly on the SELSports units in the pitch area, followed by SIS’s Soccer Pro 50, 3G synthetic grass. All surface materials were carefully selected based on their robustness and their permeability to allow rainwater to percolate through the sports pitch to the SELSports lightweight drainage units where it is temporarily stored, creating enough head/pressure to activate the siphonic rain water outlet valves.
A steel edging with PVC edge trim, was fixed to the SELSports lightweight drainage units around the perimeter of the rooftop MUGA to create a neat and distinguished finish.
This rooftop drainage system is a lightweight alternative to traditional gravel, with a high rainwater attenuation capacity, which reduces construction depths, the risk of the pitch flooding whilst simultaneously reducing the need for large rainwater attenuationtanks at ground level.
